The Wegener Center’s analysis indicated around 16,700 area-degree days during the June heatwave. Its recent evaluation suggests the ongoing heat event has reached between 22,700 and 25,000 area-degree days. The previous benchmark was set during a 24-day heatwave in July and August 2013, which reached approximately 22,100 area-degree days. This metric measures how extensively temperatures above 30 degrees spread across Austria and how long such conditions last, including land up to 1,500 meters above sea level.
Austria’s health agencies have also recorded significant human impacts from the early summer heat. The Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety reported 395 deaths associated with heat in June 2026, marking the highest June toll since the agency began monitoring.
