MUSCAT, OMAN / RankWire.AI / – Oman’s overall electricity generation increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year, reaching 37,481.8 gigawatt-hours through August 2026. In the corresponding months of 2025, the total was 35,935.3 GWh. According to initial data from the National Centre for Statistics and Information, growth was observed across multiple governorates. The rise contributed approximately 1,546.5 GWh to the national electricity output during the first eight months of 2026. August alone saw production hit 5,743.9 GWh, up from 5,676.9 GWh in July.

Muscat Governorate experienced the most significant increase in overall electricity production, with a remarkable 204.8% rise from the previous year. Al Dakhiliyah recorded growth of 44.1%, while Al Wusta’s output grew by 8.4%. Production in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah increased by 5.5%. Dhofar also saw an uptick, with electricity output climbing 4.6% during the January to August period. These figures indicate a broad expansion in electricity generation across most regions covered by the national data set.
In contrast, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced declines, with combined electricity output decreasing by 16.4%. Musandam’s production reached 376.0 GWh, showing little change from the same period in 2025. The regional data reveal notable disparities in electricity growth across Oman during this period. The National Centre for Statistics and Information classified these figures as preliminary, covering electricity output up to the end of August 2026.
Net electricity generation increases by 4.6%
Oman’s net electricity production grew by 4.6% through August, reaching 36,463.9 GWh compared to 34,871.8 GWh during the same period last year. This measure accounts for regional purchases by the Oman Power and Water Procurement Company and the Rural Areas Electricity Company. Muscat again led in growth, with net production rising by 204.4%. Al Dakhiliyah increased by 44.2%, while Al Wusta and Dhofar saw gains of 9.1% and 7.6%, respectively. Overall, net output grew by approximately 1,592.1 GWh compared to the previous year.
Net electricity output in North Al Batinah, South Al Batinah, and Al Dhahirah rose by 5.4% from the previous year. Meanwhile, North Al Sharqiyah and South Al Sharqiyah experienced a combined decline of 16.6% in net output. Musandam’s net electricity production was 368.0 GWh, with no significant change from the same period in 2025. The regional figures generally followed the pattern seen in total electricity production, with the national net output remaining above the levels recorded during the first eight months of 2025.
Water production declines across Oman in 2026
Oman’s water output decreased by 3.5% through August 2026, totaling 330.65 million cubic metres. During the same months in 2025, production was about 342.71 million cubic metres. Muscat experienced a 6.2% reduction, producing approximately 128.07 million cubic metres compared to roughly 136.57 million in the previous year. Other governorates saw a 3.4% decrease in water production, with output falling to around 149.90 million cubic metres from about 155.19 million during the same period last year.
Dhofar stood out as the primary exception to the national decline in water production, with the governorate producing roughly 52.68 million cubic metres by August, reflecting a 3.4% increase from about 50.94 million a year earlier. These latest utility statistics reveal contrasting trends for electricity and water during the first eight months of 2026. While electricity generation expanded both in total and net terms, overall water production remained below the levels seen in the same period of 2025.
