The Central Bank of Egypt issued the preliminary data on September 7, indicating reserves increased from $56.2939 billion at the end of July. This marks a rise of approximately $920.6 million during August, representing about 1.6%. The latest figure continues a consistent pattern of monthly growth in 2026, pushing Egypt’s official foreign reserves beyond the $57 billion threshold for the first time.

Compared to August 2025, this figure is $7.9638 billion higher than the $49.2507 billion recorded during that period, reflecting an annual increase of roughly 16.2%. Egypt’s reserves ended December 2025 at $51.4516 billion. Consequently, the reserves have grown by about $5.76 billion, or 11.2%, over the first eight months of 2026. Official monthly data shows a steady rise in reserves every month since January, with gains persisting through August.
The pace of reserve accumulation accelerated during the middle months of 2026. Net international reserves reached $53.1342 billion in May before climbing to $55.0723 billion in June. The upward trend continued with July’s reserves at $56.2939 billion and August’s at $57.2145 billion. The increase from May to June was approximately $1.94 billion, July added another $1.22 billion, and August contributed about $920.6 million. Collectively, these three months saw an injection of more than $4 billion into Egypt’s foreign reserve holdings.
Foreign currency inflows stay robust
Remittances sent home by Egyptians working abroad also reached record levels during the fiscal year 2025/2026. The Central Bank of Egypt reported that remittance inflows totaled roughly $47.3 billion for that period, marking a 29.6% increase compared to approximately $36.5 billion in the previous fiscal year. In June alone, remittances amounted to about $4.2 billion, which is 15.6% higher than the roughly $3.6 billion recorded in June 2025, based on official figures released in August.
Egypt’s latest available balance of payments data covers the period from July to March of fiscal year 2025/2026. During these nine months, the overall balance recorded a deficit of $1.8 billion, while the capital and financial account saw net inflows of $9.9 billion. The current account, however, experienced a deficit of $14.6 billion. These figures offer the most recent official snapshot of Egypt’s external account situation ahead of the August update on international reserves.
Reserve levels reach new monthly highs consecutively
Throughout 2026, Egypt’s reserve holdings have continually set new nominal records. Reserves stood at $52.5938 billion in January, then increased to $52.7455 billion in February. In March, reserves rose further to $52.8306 billion, followed by $53.0092 billion in April, and reached $53.1342 billion in May. By June, reserves surpassed $55 billion, climbed to over $56 billion in July, and hit $57.2145 billion in August. It is important to note that the August figure remains provisional, aligning with the standard practice for the latest monthly reserve reports.
Egypt’s August reserve level is nearly $8 billion higher than its position a year earlier. The country has now achieved three consecutive month-end totals above $55 billion. July marked the first month-ending figure exceeding $56 billion, with August surpassing $57 billion for the first time. When compared to December 2025, the reserve stock has expanded by over 10%. The August data not only establishes a new record for Egypt’s net international reserves but also continues the uninterrupted upward trend seen throughout 2026.
